My Story
My creative journey really took off when I learned to crochet at 15 years old circa 2009. As a child, both of my grandmothers taught me some basic sewing skills (mostly hand sewing and some cross stitching) but I was never interested in crafty things until I picked up crocheting. But after that, I was “hooked” lol. My mom bought me an embroidery machine to make some extra money while I was in graduate school but I only ever used the embroidery functions on it and never just sewing. But fast forward to 2019 when my grandmother passed away. I suggested having some memory bears made from her clothes so that we could all have keepsakes from her. I was initially going to have someone make them for us, but I decided that I could learn how to make memory bears. So I did, and I loved it so much that I have been selling memory bears on Etsy ever since. It brings me so much fulfillment and purpose to see how these bears can truly bring comfort to those in their grief and to also have lasting keepsakes of their loved ones. In the past few years I have expanded my fiber arts repertoire to include cross stitching, hand embroidery, and, finally, sewing my own clothes. Learning to sew garments has changed my life. There is truly nothing like wearing a 100% handmade and unique-to-you outfit that fits you perfectly. And not only that but it also helps to combat the fast fashion issues and waste that are plaguing our planet today. My goal with the craft blogs I write is to inspire others to learn a fiber arts or other creative skill, and that it’s entirely possible to teach yourself one of these skills. I’m living proof of that since I’m largely self-taught. I also want to show that it’s perfectly normal for not all of your projects to be perfect. The fear of feeling that I needed to be perfect was what held me back from learning to sew my own clothes for years. I thought that I needed to have developed my sewing skills more because clothes you’re making to wear need to be perfect. But that is the farthest thing from the truth! Nothing that I make is 100% perfect and that is perfectly fine!
I have two other loves that I want to share as well: antiques and traveling. These are hobbies that I share with my husband as he was the one who introduced me to antique stores, and we love to travel together. My antique blogs will highlight how I restore them (if necessary) and how I use them in everyday life. Most of the furniture in our house has either been passed down from family members or has been purchased from antique stores or estate sales. One of my favorite pieces is a twin bed in my craft room. It’s the bed that my grandmother and her sister grew up sleeping in. I took it with me to graduate school and now it’s still being used. I love filling our house with pieces like this because each one tells a story and I feel that it’s my obligation to be a good steward of them so they can continue to be passed on. I plan to tell the stories of these pieces in my posts.
And finally, by popular request, my travel blogs! Sharing itineraries of our travels is actually what inspired me to start a blog (although it has obviously evolved to more than travel). We have been asked so many times for travel tips and itineraries that I thought it would be a great idea to actually write out our itineraries including pictures and tips. It has been great for me as well because I love getting to relive the trips as I write the itineraries. We have two dogs that we travel with whenever we can, so I will also be including some dog-friendly trips as well! I hope you enjoy this journey with me, and please contact me using my info below if you have any requests or questions!
